What is a school psychologist?

School psychologists apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. They provide assessment, support, and intervention services to students; partner with families, teachers, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments; and collaborate with community providers to coordinate services for students.

Why would my child need testing?

All children and youth can face problems from time to time related to learning; behavior; social relationships; or managing emotions such as feeling depressed, anxious, worried, or isolated. School psychologists help students, families, educators, and members of the community understand and resolve both long-term, chronic problems, and short-term issues that students may face. Additionally, some private schools require a cognitive assessment as part of their application process, which school psychologists are trained to administer.

Why are assessments important?

Comprehensive evaluations include measures of intellectual abilities, academic skills, and processing abilities that provide important information about an individual's learning profile. The results help to answer questions about a student's functioning. Determining strengths and weaknesses help to guide intervention strategies so children can be successful in their school and home settings.
